Engorgement

Engorgement

Engorgement occurs when the breasts become overly full due to an accumulation of milk. This can happen in the early days of breastfeeding as milk production increases or if there’s a delay in feeding or pumping.

Frequent feeding is key to relieving engorgement, as it helps to empty the breasts regularly and prevent them from becoming too full. Warm compresses applied to the breasts before feeding can help soften the breast tissue and make it easier for the baby to latch.

Gentle massage of the breasts can also aid in milk flow and provide relief from engorgement. Some mothers find it helpful to express a small amount of milk by hand or with a breast pump before feeding to soften the breast and make latching easier for the baby.

Your breastmilk supply can take around 6 weeks to regulate to your baby’s needs. If ever in doubt, reach out to your healthcare provider.
